Folkestone 10 mile
Results (106KB) 2010 Race reportThe Folkestone 10 road race is always at the mercy of the variable weather conditions that occur this time of year and this year’s event was no exception.
Tuesday’s stormy weather had resulted on tons of shingle being dumped on much of the route but thanks to the late intervention of the council and the sterling work of club members the route was cleared sufficiently for the race to go ahead.
Fortunately the rain held off until the completion of the race and the onshore wind did not prevent some fine runs from the competitors.
Mike Coleman of Medway and Maidstone led the runners home, posting a fine time in less than ideal conditions of 52.08, although not as conclusive as his win last year, Mike was still 1min 12 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Aboura Mahieddine of Thanet Road Runners who finished in 53.20. Aboura was followed a minute later by Peter Tucker of the Metropolitan Police in a time of 54.20.
The ladies race was won by some distance by Tina Oldershaw of Paddock Wood AC in 1.00.58. Tina improved on both her time and second placing of last year. Tina was followed in second place by unaffiliated runner Maria Heslop who finished in a great time of 1.03.42.Third place was taken by Medway and Maidstone’s Kerrie Clark in a time of 1.04.14.
Folkestone’s own runners had fine performances led by Dave Weekes, 6th overall in 58.17. Dave was followed by Del Matcham, 1.00.47, David Gillett, 1.00.53 and Kevin Newman, 1.05.53. The Folkestone men were pipped to first place for the team prize by the Medway and Maidstone team consisting of Mike Coleman, Clayton Barrett, 58.23; Allen Jones, 60.42 and Paul Mason in 65.41.
Folkestone Ladies improved on their second place of last year, winning the team prize with great runs from the scoring runners, Helen Wheeler, 5th lady overall in a time of 1.05.15. Karen Puttock , 1.08.35 and Kylie Hassall in 1.09.17.
The remaining Folkestone runners also had fine runs. Alyson Ross finished in 1.20.40 and Trudi Curd in 1.29.21.
Many thanks to Race Director John Thompson who did a great job in his first year of organising the race despite the various obstacles that were put in his way!

The coursePlease note that their are two laps initially on the grass on the Green and this makes the course unsuitable for wheel chairs.
After leaving the Green, the run makes its way to the seafront along roads which will be closed to traffic on the way out. After that it is all traffic free seafront promenade - the obstacles become human beings at this point, so please be aware that pedestrians can, and often do, do strange things.
The course is almost completely flat apart from a short hill which will take you up into the Coastal Park. Consquently, PB's are a distinct possibility if the weather is kind to us.
