South of England Cross Country Championships ..

Eighteen members took part in Saturday’s South of England Cross Country Championships which this year were held at Stanmer Park in Brighton in very challenging conditions.

First to race were the Under 13 Girls Olivia Young and Emily Mackenzie. Olivia finished well in the large field in 202nd place. Sadly Emily twisted her ankle and was unable to complete the race but hopefully she will make a speedy recovery.

In the Under 17 Ladies race Emily Chambers continued her her brilliant Cross Country season by finishing in 32nd place in a field of 115 of the South of England’s best Under 17s. Emily was the second placed Kent runner in the field.

The weather conditions deteriorated further by the time the Ladies came to race with driving rain making the course even more treacherous. In a field of 351, Catherine O’Connor was the first Folkestone runner to complete the 8k course finishing well in 236th place in a time of 42.55, Gail Turbutt was next to finish in 285th place in 46.54 closely followed by Jenny ‘Twiggy’ Quinn in 287th in 47.09. Tina Eke finished in 316th in 50.04, Jody Stoakes, 322nd in 50.26, Jenny Raymond, 338 in 53.33, Julie Gibbs, 341st in 54.41, Lisa Smith, 349th in 62.37 and Margaret Whitham, 350th in 62.38.

The Ladies team finished in 40th place.

In the Senior Mens race, Lloyd Worsley continued his recovery from injury with a fine run finishing in 102nd place on the notoriously tough 15k course. Unfortunately the accurate finishing times for each runner in this race are not currently available. Dave Weekes was the next to finish in 371st place, Darren Crew, 477th, Paul Bartlett, 586th and Richard Fowles 714th. Total recorded competitors in the race was 740 however far more commenced the race only to be pulled out of the race by the marshals if they had not completed two laps of the course within 55minutes. Incorrectly the marshals permitted these runners to cross the finish line and as a result they were given a time. This has also impacted on the Team results. Unfortunately it is not known how many results have been impacted by this. A sad end to what was an otherwise good days racing.

Also this Saturday Jane Wren and Alan Randall, along with their dogs George Grey and Cider, competed in the first of the Fit Together Canicross Fun Runs (Series of 3) in Kingswood, Ashford.  Wren, Randall and their canine companions came 20th and 21st out of a field of 43 competitors in a time of 31:25 for the 5k course which was extremely challenging and aptly named ‘Heavenly Hills’, completely off-road through the woodland.

At Folkestone parkrun this week Andrew Fletcher was first man overall in a time of 17:54, followed by Torben Jessen 18:50, Tracy Wilkinson Begg was first lady overall in a time of 20:13, Stuart Erskine 20:21, Anthony Scott 22:45, Andrew Richardson 23:03, Chris Addison 23:21, Tim Warren 23:22, David Gillett 23:23, Richard Dyer 25:19, John O’Hara 25:31, Neil Adams 25:52, Carolyn Lewis 27:18, Alan Vigrass 27:38, Linda Robson 28:15, Angela Saunders 28:28, Penny Southern 28:29, Russell France 29:53, Lucy Weekes 30:36, Emma Long 30:36, Paul James 32:37, Nicola James 37:44, Joanne Miller 37:45
