kent XC Championships and new years lamberhurst 5k

It was the Kent Cross Country Championships this weekend and while it wasn’t as muddy as in previous years, it was just as cold with the temperature hovering just above freezing. Despite this, there were a number of Folkestone runners who donned the vest and with “It’s alright once you get going” ringing in their ears, took to the challenging, if unexciting course.

First to race in the U13 boys race was Joe Bruce. Joe has a had a great cross country season so far and continued his impressive form, finishing just outside the top 10 in 11th place in a large field of 70 runners.

Next up was Olivia Young in the U15 girls category. Olivia put in another strong run to finish in 40th position in the 4.4km race. Emily Chambers ran next in the U20 Womens race, finshing the 6.1km route in 11th place.

The U20 Men were next and FRC’s sole runner was Morgan West in what is a very competitive age group. Morgan has also had a very strong cross country season and put in another fantastic performance to finish in 13th position.

The Senior Mens race was next and there were 7 Folkestone runners taking on the 12km course. First back for the club was Ian McGilloway who had another great run to finish in 57th position. Ian is also claiming 1st runner in glasses though we are still awaiting official confirmation. Not too far behind with a solid run in 64th position was Nick Steele. Tristan Bruce was next to finish, racing in number 1000 and finishing in 100th position - a numerically pleasing result as well as a great run.

It was a close battle between the next two FRC finishers. James Whitham and Paul Bartlett were side by side throughout the entire race and finished in an identical time. Unfortunately for James, Paul just edged ahead on the line to be awarded 145th position ahead of his 146th.

Chris Woolgar was next back, powering down the rather uneven finishing straight in 182nd position while Grahame Eke showed considerable determination to finish in 202nd place.

Last up were the senior women who had 8.35km of racing to contend with. First back with a superb run was Emma Creasey who finished in an impressive 15th position. Nikki Goodwin was next to finish, having a strong run to cross the line in 40th place. Kirsty Wilson made her cross country debut to finish in 65th ahead of Gail Turbutt who finished in 90th position.

In the team competition, the senior men finished 11th out of 14 teams while the senior women came 8th out of 15 teams. A special mention must also go to Tina Eke who stood in the bitter cold all day officiating on the finish line.

Earlier in the week, Jenny Quinn took part in the Lamberhurst New Years Day 5k. Jenny finished in a time of 28:28 to finish 19th overall, 6th lady and 1st V35. Daughters Shaz and Kimmy also took part in the kids fun run.

There were plenty of parkruns taking place, with extra events taking place on New Years Day with dozens of Folkestone runners taking part. A number of runners scored new PBs, Dan Voller had a very fast run, finishing first overall at Folkestone in a time of 17:13. Dom Shepherd also improved his fastest time, setting a new PB of 21:52 ahead of Vicki Scott who set a new personal best time of 22:43.
